I served as an episode director on Season 4 of the award-winning animated adult comedy series Harley Quinn for Warner Bros. Animation and DC. In the episode, “Il Bufone,” Bane travels to Italy in search of the world’s best pasta maker. I storyboarded and edited the sequences shown below.
As a director on a 2D animated series, I place strong emphasis on character acting and comedic timing, in addition to creating my own shot lists and layouts. To enhance the emotional farewell between Bane and his Italian pasta-making mentor, Mama Nacaroni, I added an unscripted beat in which Mama reads Bane’s message and sends him off through a window.
This epilogue was particularly complex, balancing multiple setups and characters within a short runtime. I used Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy as visual anchors to guide the audience’s attention, compartmentalizing the information and maintaining narrative clarity.
