“Make it BIG!” That’s what director Chris McKay said when I started working on the opening sequence of The LEGO Batman Movie. With no script at the time, I came up with the idea of a heist at a nuclear power plant—where the Rogue Gallery literally takes control of Gotham’s power. The action escalates bigger and bigger, while the core conflict stays personal: Batman versus the Joker.
In this deleted scene, I took the idea of Batman solving a petty crime and expanded it into a full-fledged action sequence without a script. Batman causes more damage than good, while Robin demonstrates his quick thinking and competence. Director Chris McKay loved the scene so much that it was included as a DVD/Blu-ray special feature.
While exploring different ways to portray Batman and Robin’s relationship, I wrote and storyboarded this deleted scene. It features the voice acting and singing talents of the LEGO Movie editor duo, Todd Hansen (Batman) and Doug Nicholas (Robin), who punched up the jokes.
